Exam Availability

Not all exam centres in the UK accept private candidates, and those that do can be harder to find for subjects with practical elements. To make this easier, we've partnered with a network of centres across the UK, where we can arrange your exam for you at a guaranteed price. Written exam papers are available at our Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, London, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton centres, and A-Level science practicals are available at our Bolton, Coventry, London, Middlesex and Taunton labs.

If none of these are convenient, you can use our Exam Centre Finder below to find a centre near you that accepts private candidates. If you're studying overseas, exams can often be arranged through the British Council.

Exam Fees

Exam fees are separate from course fees. When we arrange your exam through our Exam Service, GCSE and IGCSE exams start from £270 and A-Level exams from £490 per subject, depending on the subject. This price covers the exam entry and all administration, so there are no hidden fees later. You can add exams to your Study Plan when you enrol, bundle them with your course fees, and spread the cost with one of our payment plans.

If you'd rather arrange your exam with a centre yourself, you'll pay that centre directly, and fees can vary widely. Entries made after the booking deadline will also incur late fees, so book early. Find out more about our Exam Service.

Exam Dates

Exam dates vary depending on your subject and awarding body. International GCSEs are available in two series each year: May/June and October/November. This applies to all of our IGCSEs, but our two GCSEs, History and Psychology, can only be sat in the May/June series. A-Levels have a single series each year in May/June.

We recommend booking at least 7 months in advance to secure your place and avoid late entry fees. You can find full dates, paper codes and start times on our Exam Timetables page.

Exam Venues

You can use our Exam Centre Finder below to locate a local centre. However if you are having difficulty you can try one of our affiliated centres, these are listed in our Private Candidate Exam Guide. To ensure our Students get the very best, we have partnered with Tutors and Exams. Tutors and Exams accommodate the home educated, private, excluded and adult learners who want to sit their GCSE and A Level exams. They will support you throughout the whole process, keeping you informed every step of the way.
