A-Levels Explained for Parents

What are A-Levels?

A-Levels, or Advanced Levels, are subject-based qualifications that can lead to university, further study, training, or work. They are usually taken by students aged 16-18 after completing their GCSEs.

Why are A-Levels important?

A-Levels offer a flexible and in-depth study of L3 academic subjects vital for your child's future. They are required by universities and employers alike. Here are some key benefits:

Depth of Knowledge: Students gain a deep understanding of subjects they are passionate about.

University Admission: A-Levels are a standard requirement for many university courses.

Career Opportunities: Many employers value the rigorous academic training that A-Levels provide.

Typically, students select three or four subjects to study over two years. However, students can achieve their qualifications quicker by fast-tracking with intensive study. Each A-Level has a recommended study duration of 360 hours.

What are the best subjects to get started with?

When helping your child choose A-Level subjects, consider their strengths, interests, and future career or academic aspirations. Some subjects are essential for certain university courses, known as 'facilitating subjects', such as: Mathematics, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, History, Business or Economics. We have several articles detailing the best subject combinations for careers in fields such as Law, Engineering and Medicine.

Why do children get demotivated and stressed when studying?

Young adults frequently face demotivation and stress while studying due to high expectations, lack of interest in subjects, heavy workloads, and inadequate study skills. Fear of failure, peer pressure, health issues, lack of support, and modern distractions further contribute to their challenges. Establishing a supportive environment, encouraging effective study habits, and maintaining a healthy balance between study and other activities are crucial to helping young adults manage these challenges.

How can parents help their children get their motivation and peace of mind back?

Parents can help their children regain motivation and peace of mind by creating a supportive and understanding environment, setting realistic expectations, and encouraging a balanced approach to study and leisure. They can foster effective study habits, ensure regular breaks, and promote healthy lifestyles through adequate sleep, nutrition, and physical activity. Additionally, open communication about stress and concerns, along with positive reinforcement and celebrating small achievements, can significantly boost their child's confidence and well-being during this important phase of life.

FAQs: Parents' Most Common Doubts

What are A-Levels?

A-Levels, or Advanced Levels, are subject-based qualifications typically taken by students aged 16-18 after completing their GCSEs. They involve in-depth study of chosen subjects over two years, culminating in exams that can lead to university admission, further study, or various career opportunities.

The majority of the work will be theory based and you will be assessed on written exams to gain those all important qualifications. Science A-Levels have optional Labs - should you wish to pursue a science related degree at university you will more than likely require this Practical Endorsement.

Our qualifications are exactly the same as you would achieve at school and are recognised by all universities, colleges and employers.

Do parents collect A-Level results?

There is no need for parents to collect their child’s exam result. Once the exams have been marked, the student will receive a notification on their online portal with the grade they have achieved. Around 12 weeks later, certificates will be posted to your home address.

Do parents pay for A-Level exams?

Yes, exam fees are determined by the exam centre and is a cost that can't be avoided should the candidate wish to sit their exams privately. Although it is an option to pay for course fees with CloudLearn and then book and pay for exams directly with a specific exam centre, most of our students find it simpler and less stressful to bundle course fees with exam fees at the point of enrolment. There is rarely any financial saving to booking directly with an exam centre, in fact, with CloudLearn channeling thousands of students through examinations, it gives us some buying power. We use this leverage to get CloudLearn students' preferential pricing for exam fees.

What happens if my child fails their A-Levels?

If your child fails their A-Levels, they have several options. They can retake the exams, usually offered in the next exam cycle. Remember that CloudLearn offers a guaranteed pass. If you do not pass your exams, we will give you the cost of your course fees back. To qualify for this, you would need to complete the recommended hours of study, attempt and pass all of the TMAs by 80%.

How expensive is a A-Level?

Our A-Level courses cost £399. Independent candidates will also have to pay for exam entry fees and any additional tuition they might require.

How much are A-Level exam fees?

For independent candidates, exam fees can vary depending on the examination board and subject. A-Level exam fees start from £460.

How are A-Levels graded?

A-Levels are graded from A* to E, with A* being the highest.

The best grade for A-Levels is an A*, as it reflects the highest level of achievement.

However, the grade required can depend on the university course or career path your child is aiming for. Most universities specify their entry requirements in terms of A-Level grades.

What subjects are compulsory in A-Levels?

There are no compulsory subjects for A-Levels. Students have the freedom to choose subjects based on their interests and future career or educational aspirations. However, certain university courses may require specific A-Level subjects, so it's important to choose wisely.

What are the easiest A-Level subjects?

The perception of what constitutes an "easy" A-Level subject can vary greatly between students, as it depends on individual strengths and interests. Generally, subjects like Sociology, Psychology and History are considered less challenging by some students, but it's crucial to choose subjects that align with your child's abilities and future goals.

At what age should you start studying A-Levels?

Students can get started with GCSEs at any age. There are no age requirements to study GCSEs with CloudLearn. At CloudLearn we have students aged 9-82, remember, learning is a lifelong endervour. Most UK students begin studying A-Levels at the age of 16, after completing their GCSEs. This typically involves two years of study, with students taking their final exams at the age of 18.

However, CloudLearn students can achieve their qualifications quicker by fast-tracking with intensive study. Each A-Level has a recommended study duration of 360 hours.

How many A-Levels are required for entry to university?

Most universities require students to have completed three A-Levels for entry into their undergraduate programmes. It’s important to check the specific entry requirements for the course and university your child is interested in, as requirements can vary. Generally, achieving high grades in three A-Level subjects will be sufficient for most university applications.

How many UCAS points do you need for university entry?

UCAS points, also known as UCAS Tariff points, are a way of measuring and comparing the relative value of different qualifications and grades in the UK education system. They are used by universities to set entry requirements and make offers to prospective students. Each qualification and grade is assigned a certain number of UCAS points.

The number of UCAS points required for university entry varies depending on the course and institution. Generally, more competitive courses and universities will require a higher number of UCAS points. Here is a general guide to UCAS points for A-Level grades:

  • A* = 56 points
  • A = 48 points
  • B = 40 points
  • C = 32 points
  • D = 24 points
  • E = 16 points

For example, if a university course requires 120 UCAS points, a student could meet this requirement with three A-Levels at grades BBB (each B grade worth 40 points).

It’s important to check the specific entry requirements for the course and university your child is interested in, as these requirements can vary widely. Many universities provide detailed information on their websites about the required UCAS points and acceptable qualifications for their courses.

If you've not enrolled, what are you waiting for?

I recently enrolled in CloudLearn and so far, the experience is top-tier! Ms. K. Gibson made enrolling so easy and simple and answered all my questions in such a timely manner. Any issues I had found or questions she solved and for that, I am grateful. Her customer service is most definitely 10/10. As for the program itself, I was nervous heading into it as I was out of practice for so long, but everything was well put together. The videos, the notes, the links everything is made so easy for you to understand. And the tutor, Mr. Kieran's response time is remarkable. Great customer service and he made me feel comfortable no matter how many questions I asked. Highly recommended!
