How much does it cost to resit GCSE?

The cost of resitting a GCSE depends on whether you are already a CloudLearn student:

  • Current CloudLearn students: You only need to pay the exam entry fee.
  • New students: You will need to pay both the course fee and the exam entry fee if you wish to study the course again.

Course Fees

All of our GCSE/IGCSE courses are £299, apart from IGCSE Science (Double Award), which is £349.

Exam Fees

  • Most GCSE/IGCSE subjects – £270 - £300
  • IGCSE Science (Double Award) – £410

CloudLearn assists with exam booking through our trusted partner centres, though availability may vary.

Multi-Course Discounts

Save when resitting more than one subject: 5% off for 2 courses, 10% off for 3, and 15% off for 4 or more. Discounts only apply to course fees, not exams.

How do I retake my GCSE Exam?

Retaking your GCSEs is simple. With CloudLearn, you enrol on your chosen subjects, complete the course online with tutor support, and then sit your exams at an approved exam centre. You’ll receive the same qualification as if you were in school.

Here’s how the process works:

Choose Your Subjects

Browse our GCSE courses and select the subjects you want to resit. Each course page outlines the content and recommended study hours to help you decide what's manageable within your timeline. Add your chosen courses to your Study Plan.

Build Your Study Plan

Click “View Study Plan” to select extras like printed books and choose your exam date. If you're aiming to fast-track, we recommend selecting the next available exam diet so you can work towards a clear deadline from the start.

Enrol and Get Started

Complete your enrolment by entering your details and paying upfront or via instalments. You’ll get instant access to your course materials through CloudPort, and any printed books will arrive shortly after. You can start studying the same day.

Study In Your Own Time

Our GCSE course duration is 12 months, so you will be able to access your online lessons for this time as well as receiving full tutor support. Extensions can be arranged if you'd like to study for a longer period of time.

Sit Your Exam and Achieve Your Goal

If you’ve chosen an exam date during enrolment, we’ll help you stay focused and ready. If you’re not sure yet, you can decide once you're confident. As long as you've followed our recommended study time, you're covered by our Pass Guarantee—or your money back.

Entry Requirements

You can embark on our GCSE courses without any prior qualifications. Don’t miss your chance to expand your education and skills!

Guaranteed Pass

We are confident in the CloudLearn study model and guarantee that you will pass your GCSE exam. We offer a full money-back guarantee, provided you follow our recommendations.

Fast-track Your Learning

Some students will prepare for the exam over several months or even years by setting their own study schedules. However, there are also students who opt for intensive study and prepare within a matter of weeks. Your only constraint is the exam schedule, as GCSE exams are held in May/June and Oct/Nov each year.

Payment options

We provide an interest-free installment plan that allows you to pay over 3 months. We also offer longer payment plans of 6, 12, 24, 36, or 48 months, which are subject to interest. For more details, please contact our student advisors at 0330 111 4006 or visit our payment plan page.

Most Common FAQs about Retake GCSEs

Can you resit GCSEs for free?

Resits are usually not free. If your school/college won’t enter you, you can enter as a private candidate and pay the centre/exam fees.

When can you do GCSE retakes?

You can retake GCSE exams in the autumn series which is October-November each year or in the summer series which is in May-June each year. Please note that it is recommended to book 6 months in advance or late fees will apply.

Is it worth retaking a GCSE?

Yes — retaking a GCSE can make a big difference to your future. A grade 4 or higher in English and Maths is required for most sixth forms, apprenticeships, and many jobs. Improving your grade can also strengthen university applications, as most universities accept GCSE resits and focus on your final result. If a better grade opens the door to the next step you want to take, it’s worth the effort.

Do universities care about GCSE retakes?

Most universities are happy to accept GCSE retakes. When you apply through UCAS, you’ll need to include all your attempts, but universities usually look at the best grade you’ve achieved. A single resit in English or Maths is very common and won’t hold you back. For highly competitive courses, such as Medicine, universities may look more closely at multiple resits, so it’s always worth checking the entry requirements of the course you’re interested in.

What is the pass rate for GCSE resits?

Pass rates for GCSE resits vary each year and depend on the subject, exam board, and how much preparation you put in. Nationally, thousands of students improve their grades through resits every summer and autumn. Success rates are often lower than for first-time GCSEs, as many resit candidates struggled the first time around, but with focused study and the right support, your chances of improving are high. At CloudLearn, our courses are designed to give you the structure and guidance you need to go into your exam with confidence.

How can I resit my GCSE without going to college?

You can study independently or online (e.g., with an online learning provider such as CloudLearn), then enter as a private candidate at an approved exam centre.

How many resits are allowed for GCSE?

There is no official limit. You can retake a GCSE as many times as you need (providers may advise alternatives if repeated attempts don’t move you forward).

How many people failed GCSE 2025?

If we define “fail” as below grade 4 (the government’s standard pass), then 32.9% of GCSE entries in England were below grade 4 in 2025. That’s about 1.86 million of 5,661,970 results (entries, not individual students).

For 16-year-olds in English and Maths specifically, around 186,000 (English) and 175,000 (Maths) did not reach grade 4 in 2025.

Are 2025 GCSEs harder?

No. Ofqual uses a “comparable outcomes” approach so the standard of work needed for each grade is held consistent year-on-year. If a paper is a bit easier/harder, grade boundaries move to keep standards stable. Outcomes in 2025 were very similar to 2024.

What is the pass mark for GCSE 2025?

There isn’t a single fixed pass mark for GCSEs. Each exam board sets grade boundaries after the exams are taken, so the exact marks needed for a grade 4 (the standard pass) or grade 5 (the strong pass) can change from year to year and from subject to subject. In 2025, a grade 4 remains the benchmark most schools, colleges, and employers look for. If you’re preparing for a resit, the key is to focus on building your knowledge and exam technique, rather than aiming for a specific number of marks, as these can vary.

I've been studying with CloudLearn since November 2022 and have had little to no issues at all. If ever I have had an issue, the student advisors, especially Niamh, have always been on hand to help out. The content is set in the same format it would be in at a face-to-face college and Tutor Marked Assessments are available to provide feedback when needed.

Great courses and service. The service I received was quick, personal and helpful. Payments options were offered to suit me. The courses themselves, although early days, look great. They are well laid out, support is easy to find and expectations are clear.
