How to retake A Levels?

Retaking your A Levels is simple. With CloudLearn, you enrol on your chosen subjects, complete the course online with tutor support, and then sit your exams at an approved exam centre. You’ll receive the same qualification as if you were in school.

Here’s how the process works:

Choose Your Subjects

Browse our A-Level courses and select the subjects you want to resit. Each course page outlines the content and recommended study hours to help you decide what's manageable within your timeline. Add your chosen courses to your Study Plan.

Build Your Study Plan

Click “View Study Plan” to select extras like printed books and choose your exam date. If you're aiming to fast-track, we recommend selecting the next available exam diet so you can work towards a clear deadline from the start.

Enrol and Get Started

Complete your enrolment by entering your details and paying upfront or via instalments. You’ll get instant access to your course materials through CloudPort, and any printed books will arrive shortly after. You can start studying the same day.

Study In Your Own Time

Our A-Level course duration is 24 months, so you will be able to access your online lessons for this time as well as receiving full tutor support. Extensions can be arranged if you'd like to study for a longer period of time.

Sit Your Exam and Achieve Your Goal

If you’ve chosen an exam date during enrolment, we’ll help you stay focused and ready. If you’re not sure yet, you can decide once you're confident. As long as you've followed our recommended study time, you're covered by our Pass Guarantee—or your money back.

Entry Requirements

You can embark on our A-Level courses without any prior qualifications. Don’t miss your chance to expand your education and skills!

Guaranteed Pass

We are confident in the CloudLearn study model and guarantee that you will pass your A Level exam. We offer a full money-back guarantee, provided you follow our recommendations.

Fast-track Your Learning

Some students will prepare for the exam over several months or even years by setting their own study schedules. However, there are also students who opt for intensive study and prepare within a matter of weeks. Your only constraint is the exam schedule, as A-Level exams are held in May and June each year.

Payment options

We provide an interest-free installment plan that allows you to pay over 3 months. We also offer longer payment plans of 6, 12, 24, 36, or 48 months, which are subject to interest. For more details, please contact our student advisors at 0330 111 4006 or visit our payment plan page.

Most Common FAQs about Retake A Levels

How much is it to resit an A Level?

The cost to resit an A-Level with CloudLearn is the same as sitting it for the first time. If you need access to the full online course, our A-Level courses are £399 each. Exam fees are separate and vary depending on the subject and exam centre.

Is it worth retaking my A Levels?

It depends on your goals and outcomes:

  • If you already achieved the grades needed—for example, for university—resitting may not be worthwhile.
  • But if you missed your target grades or didn’t pass, a successful resit can unlock university places and career options.
  • The key factor is investing sufficient effort and getting proper support to improve your grades.

Is retaking A Level embarrassing?

Not at all. Many students resit for all sorts of reasons—academic, personal, or logistical. It's a proactive step toward achieving your goals. With proper planning and support, it’s a smart move, not something to be ashamed of.

Do universities care if you retake ALevels?

Most universities, including top Russell Group institutions, do accept resits, and may even allow your offer to remain conditional on your retake performance.

Missing your target by a narrow margin typically doesn’t lead to automatic rejection—many institutions may show flexibility

How common is it to fail A Level?

Failure (grade U/F) is rare. Only around 2.5% of entries failed A‑Levels in 2025. Most students achieve grades E–A, with very small proportions getting U/F.

What is the hardest A-Level to pass?

While there’s no definitive “hardest” subject, data suggests:

  • Subjects like Computing, Physics, and Biology had lower rates of C or above in 2024—only 67% (Computing), 69% (Physics/Biology) achieved C+
  • “Hardness” depends a lot on individual strengths and prior preparation.

Is my life over if I fail my A Levels?

Not at all. Many successful professionals didn’t follow a straight path. Failing or not achieving ideal grades doesn’t define your future. There are many routes—resits, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships, gap years—that lead to success.

Are A-Level resits common?

Yes, A-Level resits are common, and many students choose to retake one or more exams to improve their grades. It is a strategic and well-accepted path to achieving academic and career goals, especially for those aiming for competitive university courses.

What happens if you do worse in A Level resit?

If your grade drops on resit, you typically stick with your best grade—so if your original grade was higher, universities will consider that. However, retaking without improvement may require reapplication or adjusting your plans. It’s important to aim higher or consolidate support before resitting.

How long does it take to resit A Level?

A-Level resit process usually aligns with your original exam schedule:

  • If you're retaking through sixth form/college, you typically study for a year and sit exams the following summer.
  • Private candidates or online learners may prepare in several months or a year, depending on readiness and availability.

I've been studying with CloudLearn since November 2022 and have had little to no issues at all. If ever I have had an issue, the student advisors, especially Niamh, have always been on hand to help out. The content is set in the same format it would be in at a face-to-face college and Tutor Marked Assessments are available to provide feedback when needed.

Great courses and service. The service I received was quick, personal and helpful. Payments options were offered to suit me. The courses themselves, although early days, look great. They are well laid out, support is easy to find and expectations are clear.
