Meet Alex.
Alex is a one-to-one AI Teaching Assistant who helps students revise and practise, checking understanding, adapting the lesson, and proving the gap has actually closed, one topic at a time. She works alongside your Cloudlearn tutor, never instead of them.
Your first topic in every subject is free
Alex always tells learners she's an AI Teaching Assistant. She is never a substitute for a real tutor.
What a session with Alex actually looks like
Every learner works with Alex one-to-one, in short, focused sessions, usually one topic at a time. Each session follows the same deliberate rhythm. It's built to prove that the learning has happened, not just that content was shown.
Picking up the thread
Alex greets the learner by name and picks up where the last session left off, with the full course map and everything covered so far in view.
Why, before What
The new topic never opens with a definition. Alex first explains why it matters and what it unlocks, because learners disengage from material whose point they can't see. Then comes the definition, then the objective for the session.
Pre-assessment & the lesson
A quick check of what's already understood, so nothing gets re-taught unnecessarily. Then the lesson itself, taught in whichever mode suits the concept: a diagram, a fully worked example, or a guided, question-led conversation.
Post-assessment & progress
A check that the learning has actually landed, then an updated Visual Knowledge Grid: a tile map of the whole course that the learner can revisit at any time.
A learner's very first session is different: a warm introduction, an explanation of how Alex works alongside CloudLearn's human tutors and how the whole methodology works, and a conversation to build a personalised learning plan together. Exam board and specification are confirmed, and study hours and exam date gathered, before any teaching begins.
When an exam is close or study time is limited, Alex applies a "must-do first" priority order straight from that subject's curriculum and says plainly what's being left for later. It's framed as a strategic choice, never as a shortcut or a failure.
See Alex in action
Take a short tour of Alex: setting up your learning plan, the four stages every topic follows, checking your progress, and getting help from one of CloudLearn's human tutors.
Built on how learning actually works
Alex isn't a general chatbot pointed at a syllabus. Her teaching behaviour follows a written, maintained specification, with the same rules applied consistently across every subject. It covers exactly how she introduces a topic, responds to a mistake, and decides whether a learner has genuinely understood something.
The Three Es
Efficient, Effective, Efficacious. Every topic is checked before and after teaching. Alex has to prove the knowledge gap actually closed, not just that content was delivered.
Why before What
Alex never opens with a definition. She explains a topic's relevance and history first, then the definition, then the objective, because learners disengage from material whose point they can't see.
Traces the real gap
Every topic breaks into one end-goal and the smaller prerequisite skills beneath it. If a learner struggles, Alex traces back through that chain to find which building block is actually missing, rather than repeating herself.
Calibrated, not assumed
Learners rate their own confidence before a topic begins, but that rating is checked against a short live demonstration before teaching begins. Confidence that isn't backed up gets corrected early in the process.
The right mode for the concept
Diagrams for spatial ideas, fully worked examples for multi-step methods, and guided questioning when a learner is close to an answer. Direct explanation is kept as the fallback, not the default.
Scaffolding that fades
Full support on a learner's first attempt at something new, then deliberately less each time after. Once a learner is performing correctly, continued full scaffolding actively slows learning down.
Slips vs. misconceptions
A careless slip gets a light 'take another look at that' step. A genuine misconception gets targeted re-teaching pulled from that subject's own curriculum file, never a generic "let me explain again."
Retrieval, deliberately spaced
Any mastered topic can be flagged for a spaced revisit. The goal is long-term retention, not a one-off pass.
These principles echo well-established ideas in learning science: retrieval practice, desirable difficulty in scaffolding, and formative (before-and-after) assessment. In Alex, they aren't background theory. They're specific, written rules that decide, in the moment, when to give a hint versus the full answer, when a topic is genuinely mastered versus needs another look, and when to bring in a human tutor.
She sounds like a teacher, not a tool
Warm, patient, honest about what she doesn't know, and specific rather than generic. These lines are adapted directly from Alex's live teaching specification. They aren't taken from any individual learner's session.
You're never alone with a question — and that's the whole point.
From the very first session, Alex makes it clear: a real CloudLearn tutor is right there in the background, every step of the way. Asking for help isn't a fallback for when things go wrong, it's built into how every session works, from the start. Alex only brings a human tutor in when it genuinely matters: if a question needs a tutor's judgement to answer properly, or if a student would clearly benefit from that extra, human support.
Two ways a learner reaches a human tutor
- 1 They ask. Contact Tutor sits on every screen, available at any point in a session. There’s no need to finish the topic, or wait to be offered it.
- 2 Alex flags it. If a learner still isn't getting there after repeated attempts at a topic, Alex stops and passes it to a tutor rather than going round again.
