You can study for GCSE Maths and English through a school, college or with an online provider like CloudLearn. Courses cover the full syllabus and lead to a recognised exam board qualification, with exams sat at an approved centre.
If you're 19 or over in England and don't already hold a grade 4 (C) or above in Maths or English, you may be entitled to fully funded tuition through the government's legal entitlement. Funding covers the course itself, though exam entry fees are sometimes charged separately, so it's worth checking the details with your provider.
Yes. CloudLearn's online courses let you study GCSE Maths and English from home, working through interactive materials at your own pace with tutor support. Exams are still taken in person at a registered exam centre.
These courses are open to anyone without an existing grade 4 (C) or above, including adults returning to education, school leavers and those retaking after a previous attempt. There's no upper age limit, and no prior qualifications are needed to get started.
Most learners complete a GCSE Maths or English course in around 6 to 12 months, depending on how many hours a week they can commit and their starting level. Studying both subjects together can be done in the same timeframe if you split your time across them.
Both subjects can feel challenging at first, especially if it's been a while since you last studied them, but they're designed to be achievable with consistent practice. Structured online courses break the content into manageable topics with tutor support, which makes it easier to work through step by step.
There's no legal requirement for adults to hold a GCSE pass, but many colleges, universities, apprenticeships and employers ask for a grade 4 (C) or above in Maths and English as a minimum entry requirement. Students aged 16 to 18 who haven't achieved a grade 4 are required to keep resitting as a condition of their post-16 funding.
You can resit the exam, and many learners improve their grade the second or third time around, especially with focused revision or a structured course. Not passing can limit access to certain courses, apprenticeships and jobs that set a grade 4 as a minimum requirement, but there's no other penalty, and you can retake at any point.
